5 important things to consider when buying computers for your business

Gone are the days when computers were only for the elite or for management only within a company. Nowadays, it is nearly impossible to run a business without one, or let alone, to have an employee without an online portfolio.

The world has evolved in a way that markets now extend far beyond geographical location, and the best way to reach out is online.

Computers are now an essential work tool. With all the tech companies that make computers and their accessories selling them at different prices, we know how daunting it can be when you have to make a choice of just one brand.

For example, the current Best Buy deal of the day is a selection of well-priced laptops, and we picked a Lenovo Touchscreen Chromebook on there at a decent $279. How did we come to that decision? There are a number of considerations we made. Learning these will help you to choose the best laptops for your team.

1. RAM

Random Access Memory refers to a computer’s local storage. When you save files, they go to your hard drive, a larger space within the computer. The function of RAM is to draw out and temporarily store files that you will be working on as you work.

The capacity/size of RAM is important because the speed at which files can be retrieved affects the overall functionality of the computer. Therefore, the more RAM you have, the more efficiently the computer will work. Always ask how much RAM the laptop has before you buy it.

2. Ports and Connectivity

You will need to ensure that the laptop you buy has enough ports for all the equipment your team may need to connect to it. For example, if there will be external devices that need to be connected via the USB port, the ports must be enough to not cause an inconvenience if multiple connections are required.

Connectivity refers to whether the laptop can connect to WiFi networks and Bluetooth, also very important in a business setting, moreso for online work.

3. Operating System

An operating system is a juice that the computer runs on. It is what ensures that the computer works smoothly, keeping it up to date, constantly organizing hardware and software, and also making sure of a pleasant user experience.

The choice of the operating system is especially important if you want a seamless continuation of work across compatible devices if you want your team to complete tasks that they started on their computers, on their phones, or tablets.

The market is currently dominated by 3 operating systems – macOS, Microsoft Windows, and Chrome OS.

4. Battery Life

How long a laptop can stay on without being charged is very important. If you forget your charger at home and are unfortunate enough to not have anyone else around you who uses the same laptop charger or they are unwilling to lend you theirs if they do, how much work will you be able to get done?

What if the wall plugs are incompatible? Or you get lost in the groove of work and forget to plug it in? Battery life is paramount in your purchase decision-making process.

5. Size of Screen

This speaks to the functionality of the computer and the comfort of the individuals who will be using the machines. For some who struggle with their eyesight, larger screens are advisable where others will prefer smaller screens as they are more portable, which makes for easier storage.

There are several other factors to consider like the cost of the laptops – what budget you would have set aside for them, the warranty on them if they come with an office suite or security software, and what the intended use for the computers is.

Our list is not exhaustive but seeks to highlight the most important factors to consider when buying computers for your team. Make sure to ask any questions you may have before committing to the purchase.
