If you are scrolling Instagram on daily basis I am sure you might have came across the mention “ops” and let us be honest, you had no idea what does it mean and what they are talking about.
Even earlier I too had the same confusion, when I was scrolling through a comment section. But after doing a research and learning what the particular Intagram language mean, we have made this article.
In this article we will be explaining about the term “ops” particularly on Instagram. Let’s explore more.
OK so “OPS” basically means your opponents or enemies – people who are against you in some way. On Instagram, it specifically refers to:
It’s literally just short for “opposition” – like the people opposed to you. Simple enough, right?
This is not a random internet term that appeared out of no where. This term OPS have been around in the Hip Hop and Street culture over the decades. Artists have already used to this term to refer their rivals or actual Enemies (sometimes a serious stuff.)
But then, as always happens, social media got hold of it and watered it down. Now teens on Instagram use it for their frenemy who didn’t like their beach pics.
I think that’s why some people get annoyed when they see suburban kids throwing “ops” around in their captions. Like, the original meaning was WAY more serious than your high school drama, you know?
I’ve seen “ops” used in so many ways on IG. Here are the most common ones:
“This one’s for my ops watching 👀”
(Translation: I know my haters are looking, so here’s something to make them jealous)
“The ops stay watching but never double tap lmao”
(Translation: People who don’t like me still stalk my profile but never like anything)
“New hair who dis? Ops stay mad 💅”
(Translation: I look good and my enemies are jealous)
“Blocking my ops in 2023 for peace of mind”
(Translation: I’m cutting off negative people who watch me)
It’s also turned into this whole thing where people joke about having a “burner account” to watch their ops without getting caught. Social media is WILD sometimes!
Now you might have got a question, how to know if the ops mentioned refer to you.
Here are some signs based on my experience:
The funniest part is when people accidentally reveal themselves as ops by mentioning something they could only know if they were stalking your content! I had an ex-friend once who claimed she never looked at my Instagram anymore, then slipped up and mentioned my new apartment that I’d ONLY shown on my stories. CAUGHT!
I think the whole “ops” thing blew up because it perfectly captures the weird passive-aggressive energy of social media. Like, we all know there are people silently watching us who don’t have the best intentions, right?
Calling them “ops” is kind of a power move. Instead of feeling weird about those lurkers, you’re basically saying “I see you watching, and I’m unbothered.”
It’s also just funny to imagine someone who supposedly hates you taking time out of their day to keep tabs on everything you do. Like, thanks for the engagement, I guess? 💁♀️
Obvious answer is no. You no need to care about what they post or what they talk about you until they directly mention ot tag you, don not interfere with them. In simple words let them bark. Ignoring then is the best you can do than indulging in the fight.
To understand this, see things in a bigger picture. What they want from you? Without tagging you they are trying to initiate a fight. But if you are not falling for it, your already won. So don’t care about them.
After going down that unhealthy rabbit hole of obsessing over who’s watching me, I came up with some better ways to handle it:
Some of these make me laugh so hard:
“Shoutout to my ops, y’all are my biggest fans fr”
“To the ops: I hope your phone dies right before you can screenshot this”
“Posting this because I know my ops got notifications on 🔔”
“Dear ops, I’m doing amazing, thanks for asking!”
“Plot twist: I’m actually YOUR op”
At the end of the day, “ops” is just another piece of slang that helps us talk about the weird dynamics of social media. It’s both funny and kinda sad that we’ve created this whole vocabulary around people who secretly watch us with bad intentions.
The healthiest approach is probably to joke about your “ops” sometimes but not let them live rent-free in your head. Post for the people who actually support you, not to prove something to the ones who don’t.
