RBI Rate Hike Leaves Bitcoin’s Rupee Value Exposed

The Reserve Bank of India just raised rates for the first time in nearly four years, and the rupee still slipped. If you hold Bitcoin in India, that split matters more than the dollar chart. Your rupee value can rise even when the coin looks flat, because the currency is doing part of the work.

Mumbai had barely filed Governor Sanjay Malhotra’s Wednesday statement when the rupee tested territory near its record low. A central bank tightens and the currency is supposed to catch a bid. This week it did not.

A 25 Basis Point Hike That Failed to Lift the Rupee

The Monetary Policy Statement published by the Reserve Bank of India on 7 October records a unanimous vote to lift the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and to move the stance from neutral to calibrated tightening. Rate cuts are off the table in the near term. The next step is a hike or a pause. You can see what that means for a live holding by checking BTC to INR rather than stopping at the dollar print. That conversion is the number a tax return actually uses.

The same statement lifts the 2026–27 inflation projection to 5.2%, with the December quarter at 6.0%, and puts real GDP growth at 7.1%. A firmer economy gave the committee room to tighten. The currency did not answer in kind. Reuters, in its 7 October account of the decision, called it the first rise in nearly four years.

Tighter Policy Still Left the Rupee Doing the Work

A higher policy rate is meant to support the rupee. This one did not. In “India rate hike will not stem outflows, leaving central bank in a bind,” Reuters wrote on 8 October that the currency is already down about 7% this year and slipped after the decision toward its all-time low of 96.96 per dollar. Foreign investors have pulled a record $30 billion from Indian equities this year. Sajjid Chinoy, chief India economist at J.P. Morgan, is quoted there saying the rupee could remain the shock absorber.

A companion Reuters note that morning had the currency down 0.4% on policy day to 96.7750, with Brent crude back above $102. The Reserve Bank’s rate panel showed an FBIL reference of 96.6149 early on 9 October. CoinDesk’s Bitcoin price page that day had the coin near $83,309. Those two prints multiplied come to about ₹80.5 lakh a coin. That is an author conversion of the 9 October figures, not a published exchange close.

The Rate Path Now Sitting Inside a Rupee Portfolio

Calibrated tightening, in the 7 October resolution, means another increase is live if inflation broadens. The oil-focused Reuters piece quotes Goldman Sachs looking for another 25 basis points in December.

For a rupee Bitcoin holder the effects stack like this:

  1. A softer dollar-rupee rate raises the INR value of the same coin and can inflate the gain you report.
  2. Term deposit rates above one year, shown on the Reserve Bank’s rate panel on 9 October at 6.00% to 6.75%, make the cash alternative easier to see.
  3. A later hike that finally stabilises the rupee would trim that INR value without a crash in Bitcoin.

Mark the dollar price and the rupee rate on the same day. The gap is the currency channel, not a separate Bitcoin move.

Tax Rules and the Central Bank Still Point Different Ways

The hike did not warm the Reserve Bank to private crypto. In an 8 July Reuters report, the central bank had again argued for a policy leaning toward prohibition. Tax-department documents reviewed in that story kept gains taxed at 30% and put the holder base near 39 million traders, with about $2.1 billion at the end of May 2026. Those May figures are the latest holder estimate in the story, not a post-hike count.

That 30% levy is computed in rupees. A softer currency can lift the proceeds of a sale you thought was flat in dollars. An earlier look at how India builds crypto defenses while banks digitize showed the same split: private Bitcoin keeps trading in rupees while the banking system upgrades on a separate track.

A Calmer Drawdown That Is Not a Smaller Risk

Dollar context still sets the other half of the price. Binance Research’s weekly market commentary dated 5 October had Bitcoin almost flat on the week near $84,800, and the cycle low at $57,800 on 1 July. That low is 54.2% under the October 2025 high of $126,200.

Adjusted for volatility, the commentary treats the break as in line with earlier bear markets, not evidence of a higher floor. A rebound of about 47% off the low was still 35.6% below the high, a zone where past bounces have usually retested the low.

If you are long in rupees, you are running both risks. A retest would hit the dollar leg. Further rupee weakness would cushion the INR screen and complicate the tax bill.

Marks Worth Watching Before the December Meeting

The next useful marks are the rupee, the oil price and whether December brings another step. The 5 October commentary flags US CPI on 14 October and a 10-year Treasury yield near a 24-year high as the backdrop for risk assets.

Check the rupee value on a day the dollar price is flat. If the INR figure moved, the policy decision and the currency did the work. If December tightens again and the rupee still cannot hold, you are looking at a currency that keeps absorbing the shock.
